Recent Changes in the US Business Cycle∗
The US business cycle expansion that started in March 1991 is the longest on record. This paper uses statistical techniques to examine whether this expansion is a onetime unique event or whether its length is a result of a change in the stability of the US economy. Bayesian methods are used to estimate a common factor model that allows for structural breaks in the dynamics of a wide range of ma...
متن کاملA note on the second linearity critique
As I say in the paper, there is a second linearity or knife-edge or razor-edge critique. First popularized in a short review article by Jones (1999), and further elaborated in Jones (2005), it consists of the claim that to sterilize the (strong) scale effect the models proposed by DinopoulosThompson (1998), Peretto (1998), Young (1998), and Howitt (1999), assume that the mass of products/firms,...
متن کاملBusiness - cycle consumption risk and asset prices ∗
We disaggregate consumption growth into components with different levels of persistence and show that a single business-cycle consumption factor can explain satisfactorily the differences in risk premia across book-to-market and size-sorted portfolios. We argue that accounting for persistence heterogeneity in consumption is important for interpreting cross-sectional risk compensations in financ...
متن کاملCan Regime-Switching Models Reproduce The Business Cycle Features of US aggregate consumption, investment and output?
The ability of Markov-switching (MS) autoregressive models to replicate selected classical business-cycle features found in US post-war consumption, investment and output is compared to that of linear models. Univariate MS models appear to offer more dynamically parsimonious representations, but generally are unable to reproduce features missed by linear models. In the multivariate models, some...
متن کاملWhy Does Consumption Lead the Business Cycle?¤
Consumption in the US leads output at the business cycle frequency. Standard RBC models predict the opposite. We show in this paper that the lack of an endogenous propagation mechanism that can support demand shocks is responsible for the discrepancy between RBC theory and data. ¤I thank two anonymous referees and the editor Harald Uhlig for helpful comments on an earlier version of the paper.
